Evaluation of innovative sprayed-concrete-lined tunnelling

Benoit D. Jones, Alun H. Thomas, Yu S. Hsu, Matouš Hilar

The frontshunt tunnel was the first tunnel of the Terminal 5 (T5) project at Heathrow to be constructed and was the first section of sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnel to be constructed using the method known as LaserShellTM. This innovation represented a significant deviation from the methods previously used in SCL construction. The paper presents the methodology and typical results of the numerical modelling and shows that the predictions of displacements and stresses compared well with the field measurements. The paper was published in Geotechnical Engineering 161 Issue GE3. The paper is available on: www.atypon-link.com

The Prague – Beroun Tunnel and Basic Parametrs of Similar Tunnels

Matouš Hilar, Martin Srb

The Patnitop tunnel will be a part of the Udhampur to Banihal Transport Corridor on National Highway NH-1A in Kashmir in India. A proposed NATM tunnel is 9120 m long, the maximum tunnel overburden is 1050 m. Due to expected traffic volumes, tunnel length and related construction costs, only single tube tunnel with 2 lanes and bi-directional traffic together with a parallel emergency escape tunnel is considered for the time being. Procedure of very long and deep NATM tunnel design is described in the paper. The paper was presented in the Czech magazine Tunnel 4/2007.

The Lochkov Tunnel, SOKP 514 a New Model of Tender Conditions for Tunneling Projects, Experience of the Driving of an Exploration Gallery for Excavation of Full-Face Tunnel

Martin Srb

Examples from countries with developed tunnelling industries show that there are many conditions which must be met to be able to successfully and effectively implement tunnelling projects. Some of the conditions are affected by natural factors (e.g. geology, hydrology, terrain morphology) and other by artificial/human factors (built-up areas, exploitation of the landscape, regulations, capacity and competence of involved subjects, societal influences, project organisation and control, traditions etc.). While the natural factors are essentially invariable on the scale of the duration of the planning and subsequent construction period, the artificial factors continuously vary. The optimum solution of the planning and subsequent construction of a particular project must be based on an effort to take into consideration specific conditions of the project and allow for the possible development.

Yangtze River Crossing – Challenging Large-Profile TBM Excavation in China

Harald Wagner

Wuhan is the Capital of Hubei province and one of the largest and most important cities in China with population over 7 million people. Wuhan city is divided into three parts by Yangtze river and Han river. The restricted passage across Yangtze (two bridges) blocks seriously the traffic and impedes the economic development of Wuhan city. So the Wuhan government has decided to build a road tunnel across Yangtze river in the centre of the city.

Recovery of a collapsed section of the Brezno tunnel

Matouš Hilar, Vladislav John

Construction of the Brezno tunnel started using the Pre-Vaulting Support method. The tunnel excavation in complicated geological conditions caused many difficulties which resulted in a significant collapse in 2003. The presented paper deal with preparation and execution of the tunnel recovery using SCL method. The paper was presented in the Czech magazine Tunnel 3/2007. Mr. John is employee of the Czech contractor Metrostav.

Numerical modelling of the Brezno tunnel re-excavation

Matouš Hilar, Vladislav John

The presented paper deal with 2D and 3D FEM numerical modelling of the Brezno tunnel collapse recovery. 2D calculations were realised to provide sensitivity studies, 3D modelling assisted to evaluate tunnel face stability, impact of generated pile walls, excavation procedure, etc. Results of the modelling were compared with the monitoring results (back analysis). The paper was presented at conferrence EURO:TUN 2007 in Vienna. Mr. John is employee of the Czech contractor Metrostav.

NATM Tunnelling at Dulles Airport

Ermín Stehlík, Martin Srb

Tunnel collapse in 2000 during excavation of connection tunnel at Dulles airport causing fatal injury raised the Client's concerns about construction safety. All consequent tunnelling works have been set under new systematic supervision schneme. Since 2004 to 2006 several conventionally mined (NATM) tunnels have been successfully completed. Paper briefly describes specifics and procedures of some of these drives as well as an experience with the "NATM Engineer" role as part of the Contractor's team. The paper was presented at WTC 2007 in Prague.

Tunnels on the road NH-1A from Jammu to Srinagar - Kashmir, India

Petr Svoboda, Martin Srb

An operated road from Jammu to Srinagar is located in a very complicated terrain of Himalaya foothills. Decision about four-laning of the road NH - 1A has been made as a part of this massive infrastructure development in India. Company D2 consult cooperated on the project as a tunnel consultant under the American company Louis Berger Inc. The paper deal with proposal for feasible locations of tunnels and consequent design of seven short NATM tunnels on the section Udhampur - Banihal. The paper was presented in the Czech magazine Tunnel 1/2007.
